Pitch for Advanced Portfolio

Name

Form (documentary, music video)

Genre/sub genre
Indie
Major influences-what existing products would you like to emulate?
I would either like to make an 80s style video similar to the likes of lucky girl by fazerdaze with lots of zoom ins and faster paced editing. If I do create a video in this style I would like to use jumpcuts in a similar way to that of season 2 episode three by glass animals  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2Kwos_oWSc
As well as this  I would use slow motion footage inspired by youth by glass animals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZdsmLgCVdU

If I do not decide to do this, I would like to make a video to a slower song such as head above the water incorporating elements such as reversing some of the footage which is inspired by alt-j's breezeblocks video.  Also really like the cool blue/grey tone of this videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVeMiVU77wo

If I do create a music video to head above the water my main influence would be the music video to chained by the XX. I Would like to film much of my video in and around the pool with both underwater footage and slow motion aerial footage. I also like the cool tone of this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeWxEH9tb0c

As well as this I like the effect of the of the projected images in the video for crystalized by the XX on the bands faces and I would like to recreate this. This is also done by palace in their video for holy smoke.

Music video-what song is it? Can you get permission or prove that you have sought permission?
What is the narrative of the song?
Is there an existing video for it?
I would like to do the song head above the water by palace.

I have tweeted the band and I have emailed their management, beatnik creative.

I am planning to creative a narrative based around water and the sea.
There is an already an existing video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Akk_lQzGSog

Organisation

When, where and whom are you going to film?
I am planning to film the majority of the narrative footage on the 7 and 8th of July at my friends pool and house in Newmarket. I am also planning to film some footage at RAF Upwood. I am then going back at the end of the summer ad film any remaining footage that is needed. I am planning to film footage of the band during the course of the summer at a separate location at my friends studio in south end. I will also film some drone footage of the sea, cliff and beach in Ibiza and Jamaica over the holidays.
What equipment are you going to need to use/borrow?
I am going to use a drone, lights, a variety of lenses, go pro and steadicam.

initial ideas mood board: head above the water

Mood board

This mood board outlines the themes of water, smoke and nature. These are the themes that i want to be the main themes in my music video. It also illustrates the slight blue/grey tone that i want my video to be. The mood board features pictures of the bands Superfood, Wolf Alica and The Smiths  I would like to base the look of my band off of these bands.

Research: history of the music video Class notes

History of the music video

1935
Len Lye made the first “music video” in 1935 and it was to advertise the post service. The film was hand coloured and the visuals were in time to the music.

1950s and 60s
Scopitiones were a video jukebox that was created in France. It used 16mm film, which was unpopular because of its quick depreciation. They could play 3-minute musical films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UxGm8UNuyY

1960s
In the 60s band like the Beatles became global. Top of the pops was very influential and the band that had the top spot in the charts would often play on the show, however if the band were in another country then a music video would have to be played in their place. an example of this is the video for “Strawberry Fields Forever.” It features reverse, slow motion, fades, camera filters and slow mixes, and a collection of unusual, slightly imposing camera angles. These all reflect the zeitgeist and the psychedelic music and culture of the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UQK-UcRezE

1960s
Bob Dylan made a video to the song subterranean home sick blues. It was very simple and cheaply made but it is effective. It has since inspired many parodies and many could say it is iconic.

1975
The first big budget music video was created by Queen to bohemian rhapsody. It makes use of many special effects that were popular at the time.

1980s
In the 80s pop music videos were much more common and in 1984 Micheal Jacksons 'Thriller' was released. it was directed by John Landis who directed films such as An American werewolf in London and the blues brothers. This resulted in a much more narrative music video. The video was and still is cultural phenomenon, it has become iconic.

Peter Gabriel released the video for 'sledgehammer' in 1986. It used cutting edge stop motion animation techniques. “Sledgehammer” video won a so-far unsurpassed nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1987, and is MTV’s most-played music video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJWJE0x7T4Q

1990s
Jamiroquai’s biggest hit virtual insanity featured a "moving flaw" in a video that looks as if it is all shot in one take. In reality the video is just seamlessly edited.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE

In 1998 Britney Spears released 'hit me baby one more time'. Unlike most other pop videos, there is little  special effects in this music promo. It is, instead, an example of the perfect synchronicity between a song and the accompanying video, strong direction and choreography.

2000s
In 2008 Beyonce released single ladies. It was directed by Jake Nava and was inspired by a 1960s performance on the ed sullivan show. It relies less on narrative and more on compelling choreography and it is very voyeuristic.

Research on Carol Vernallis

Diegesis
This is the world of the music video (where the video is set) and it revealed in the music video quite slowly. In order for diegesis to be revealed certain shots are emphasized though the use of framing and repetition so particular shots seem more important than others therefore creating a specific look.

Camera
Establishing shots and master shots are important and frequently used in music videos. The use of close ups and mid shot is also prevalent. The framing and composition of shots is very distinctive to the video and creates a unique look.

Narrative
Most music videos tend not to have a concrete chronological narrative, more of an episodic expression or exploration of a topic or theme. It is important that most music videos do not have a structured narrative like a film would. This is because the video is there primarily to enhance the music, providing a visual commentary or advertising the song. If the narrative is too engaging then the attention is taken away from these crucial things.

Editing
Some music videos may bring the editing to the foreground of the video and make it visible instead of seamless like continuity editing. This results in different videos using editing in a distinctive way that is identifiable to that specific music video. For example lots of jump cuts or graphic matches may be used through out the video to create a particular style and look. Editing can also be used to highlight and emphasize certain elements of the song that is being used such as certain lyrics or beats.

How the theory will inform my practice

  •  I will use diegesis and reveal the world of the music video gradually placing focus on certain shots. I will use this for the instrumental introduction and use certain shots to introduce the word of the video.
  • I will also use an episodic narrative that explores a theme in my video  rather than a structured narrative.
  • As well as this I would like to highlight some beats of the song with certain shots such as a girl falling into the water when a symbol crashes as the symbol crash emulates the crashing of waves.

Andrew Goodwin

Theory’s summarized from his book dancing in the distraction factory

Genre
Music videos tend to adhere to a certain genre, using certain locations, props and people that fall within the conventions of a certain genre. For example a music video for a rap song will include lots of expensive objects such as a sports car, an expensive location such as a pool or expensive house and they will often have many scantily clad women being objectified by the men in the video.
This links to the idea of voyeurism and how men and women can be portrayed seductively in videos for the gratification of the audience. It is often women who are the subject of this seductive representation and this thinks to the theory of the male gaze.

Correlation between music and visuals
There is an evident link between the visuals of the video and the music, whether it is the lyrics or the beat. The visuals illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics.
Illustrate: the music can be set to visuals that illustrate the meaning of the lyrics.
Amplify: this is where narrative and performance can be used to connote the meaning behind a music video
Contradict/disjuncture: this is where the visuals have no correlation to the music and lyrics an can often create a completely different meaning. This can be seen in fat boy slims praise you video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruAi4VBoBSM

Star image
Music videos help to either create or adhere to a star image. Each star has a different visual image that is unique to them for example lady gaga is presented a as quirky and wacky due to the image created of her through her outfits and music videos. The star has to play an important role it the video. This is because the record company that the star is signed under needs a certain amount of exposure from the star in order to promote the artist and make a profit.
The fourth wall (where the artist sings to the camera and uses direct mode of address to the audience) is nearly always broken in music videos.

Intertextual references are often used in music videos for example the video for season 2 episode 3 intertextually references 90s Mario kart.

RESEARCH: initial ideas for my music video

Initial Ideas

After looking at past music videos and documentaries created by A level students I have decided to produce music video as I have a keen interest in music and the industry. I think I would like to do a music video that fits in with the “indie” genre. After looking at past videos I think that I would like to use a myriad of different angles, techniques and after effects in order to make my music video engaging and professional as possible. I would like to use slow motion, video captured by drone and underwater footage in my music video.

This is also done by palace in their video for holy smoke. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pib8eYDSFEIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7QfNALDgl4

I have yet to choose a song and my ideas for a video vary depending on the song I eventually choose. However I have had some initial thoughts after looking at other videos in the indie genre. Below is a mind map that I made of some of my initial ideas for shot types and effects based off of some other music videos that I have looked at.  some of my initial ideas for songs are:
chamber of reflection by mac de marco
life its self by glass animals
busy earnin by jungle
west ryder silver bullet by kasabian
house of the rising son (cover) alt-j
teenage girl by cherry glazerr
she's a witch by gengahr
head above the water by palace
